Japanese point guard Yuki Kawamura strengthened his bid for an NBA roster spot by recording 15 points and 10 assists in the Chicago Bulls’ Summer League game against the Indiana Pacers in Las Vegas on Monday night. Coming off the bench, the 5-foot-8 playmaker also collected three steals in 27 minutes and 46 seconds, forcing a backcourt violation and repeatedly igniting fast breaks that led to finishes by David Muoka and second-year forward Matas Buzelis. Kawamura, a free agent after a brief two-way stint with the Memphis Grizzlies last season, is attempting to secure any kind of NBA contract. “I believe I still can play in the NBA,” he told the Chicago Tribune before Monday’s outing. “I just want to get a contract.” His double-double, built on aggressive on-ball defense and pinpoint passing, drew cheers from a contingent of Japanese fans at Cox Pavilion and underscored his reputation as the smallest—but one of the most energetic—players on the floor. Chicago’s backcourt is already crowded with Josh Giddey, Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu under standard contracts and all three two-way slots filled, but Summer League head coach Billy Donovan III said Kawamura’s ability to “get in the paint, play-make and generate easy shots for others” is turning heads. Kawamura’s performance keeps him in the conversation for an NBA deal, whether in Chicago or elsewhere, and adds another chapter to Japan’s still-nascent presence in the league.
