Liverpool beat Yokohama F Marinos 3–1 in a pre-season friendly at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama on 30 July, rounding off the Premier League champions’ Asian tour. J-League winger Asahi Uenaka put the hosts ahead, but 16-year-old Trey Nyoni equalised and then put Arne Slot’s side in front before fellow academy prospect Rio Ngumoha sealed the win. New signings Hugo Ekitike and record €145 million acquisition Florian Wirtz both started for Liverpool. The match went ahead before a near-capacity crowd despite a tsunami warning issued earlier in the day following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Pacific coast. Club officials said there were no safety incidents. Slot told reporters after the game that the tour had provided “valuable minutes” for young players as Liverpool step up preparations for next month’s Premier League opener.
