Two Japanese nationals, a man in his 40s from Shizuoka and a man in his 50s from Fukuoka, were shot and killed in Manila, Philippines, on the night of August 15, 2025. The victims were shot immediately after exiting a taxi in a busy commercial district frequented by foreign tourists. The assailants, who approached the victims and demanded they get out of the taxi, then shot them and stole their belongings before fleeing on a motorcycle. Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing the attackers waiting in ambush and fleeing the scene. Philippine police arrested two male suspects, who are brothers, in connection with the killings. One of the suspects was reportedly a local travel guide. Authorities believe the murders were planned, with the suspects allegedly hired by a Japanese individual residing in Japan, who promised a reward of approximately 23 million yen (900,000 Philippine pesos) for the killings. The Japanese embassy in the Philippines has urged caution among Japanese nationals and foreign residents, advising against nighttime walking and recommending not to resist if confronted by robbers. The embassy has also requested the Philippine government to take measures to prevent recurrence amid a rise in street robberies targeting Japanese nationals in Manila since October 2024.
