The U.S. Navy said a fire that broke out aboard the amphibious transport dock USS New Orleans while the ship was anchored off the White Beach Naval Facility in Uruma, Okinawa, was extinguished at about 4 a.m. on 21 August, roughly 12 hours after it started around 4 p.m. the previous day. Sailors from the New Orleans, assisted by crews from the nearby USS San Diego, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels and the Japan Coast Guard, fought the blaze, which spread across multiple decks. The Seventh Fleet reported two sailors sustained minor injuries and were treated on board. The San Antonio-class vessel, commissioned in 2007 and forward-deployed to Sasebo as part of the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group, will remain at anchor while the Navy investigates the cause of the fire and assesses damage. The incident adds to pressure on the service’s already stretched inventory of amphibious warships.
