An armed group stormed the Kenya Human Rights Commission’s headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi, on Sunday, forcing the cancellation of a press conference that a coalition of mothers had convened to denounce extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and arbitrary arrests ahead of the nationwide Saba Saba demonstrations set for 7 July. Witnesses said the assailants assaulted attendees and stole personal items, including a phone belonging to a Standard newspaper journalist. Activists allege the attackers acted on behalf of the government, which has faced mounting criticism over its handling of recent protests and police conduct. The raid came hours after the KHRC said immigration authorities had deported its senior legal advisor, Martin Mavenjina, to Uganda late Saturday on his return from South Africa. The rights body described both incidents as part of an escalating campaign to intimidate human-rights defenders. Kenyan police had not issued a statement on either the attack or the reported deportation by late Sunday. Organisers said Monday’s Saba Saba rallies, marking the anniversary of the country’s 1990 pro-democracy protests, would proceed as planned.
