Kenya's Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed that the search for missing fishermen and herders following the Todonyang attack in Turkana County earlier this year is ongoing. The government has not yet verified the exact number of fatalities or missing persons, with estimates exceeding 40 individuals. Murkomen emphasized that the government is not withholding information and that previous fatality figures were based on police-verified data. In response to the insecurity, a multi-agency security team, including deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), will be sent to Todonyang to address cross-border attacks and enhance security. Murkomen also highlighted challenges in West Pokot County, such as livestock theft, illegal mining, and border disputes, and announced a crackdown on illegal mining activities in Turkana and West Pokot, halting unauthorized commercial mining operations. Additionally, the government is intensifying security along the Kenya-Uganda border to combat contraband and drug trafficking. Murkomen condemned recent incidents in West Pokot involving killings and alleged acts of cannibalism, vowing firm action against those responsible. He is currently presiding over the 16th Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Kapenguria, West Pokot County, to assess security and citizen services.
