Athletics Kenya said it will use Saturday’s 50th Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, as the official trial to select its teams for the 5,000 m women’s and 10,000 m men’s races at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The women’s 5,000 m is headlined by double Olympic champion and current Diamond League leader Beatrice Chebet, who is seeking a fourth win of the season. Her main challenger is Agnes Jebet Ngétich, holder of the 10-kilometre road world record. The top three finishers will secure places alongside defending world champion Faith Kipyegon. Twelve men will vie for three spots in the 10,000 m, led by 2022 world silver-medallist Stanley Waithaka Mburu, experienced 5,000 m specialist Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli and former under-20 champion Benson Kiplangat. Kenya has not won a world title at the distance since 2001, adding pressure to Saturday’s race.
