The fourth edition of the Nairobi City Marathon will take place on Sunday, 6 July, with organisers confirming more than 15,000 entrants from 75 nationalities—a record field for the event launched in 2022. Competition Director Kennedy Tanui said the surge in registrations leaves only limited slots in the 4-kilometre fun run and underscores the race’s ambition to become a fixture on the global road-running calendar. All races will start and finish at a refurbished Uhuru Park, replacing Nyayo National Stadium. Race Technical Director Ibrahim Hussein said the new route, which snakes through the Nairobi Expressway, Museum Hill and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport corridor, has been certified by World Athletics, allowing any records set on the day to stand. Defending champions Eliud Magut and Cynthia Jerotich Limo headline the elite field. They face competition from two-time Paris Marathon winner Paul Lonyangata, U.S-based Edward Cheserek, Sandrafelis Chebet Tuei and Philomena Cheyech. Winners of the men’s and women’s marathons will each earn KSh 3.5 million from a total prize purse of KSh 24 million. To accommodate the race, authorities will close the Nairobi Expressway between James Gichuru Road and JKIA from 10 p.m. Saturday until 3 p.m. Sunday, alongside sections of Waiyaki Way, Museum Hill and Mombasa Road. The National Police Service says security will be tight and is urging residents to plan travel in advance.
