Kenyan social-media personality Kakan Maiyo was released on a Ksh 10,000 (about US$78) police bond on Friday after spending two days in custody. Maiyo had been arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of posting a video that allegedly incited violence against police officers and their families. Law enforcers said the content violated public-order laws, but no formal charge had been filed in court by the time of his release. Maiyo’s lawyer, Phillip Maiyo, said he will seek to have any prospective charges dropped, arguing that the arrest violated his client’s right to free expression. The case is the latest in a series of Kenyan prosecutions testing the limits of online speech, as authorities grapple with the growing influence of digital platforms such as TikTok.
