Department of Justice Special Attorney Ed Martin was seen on Friday inspecting New York Attorney General Letitia James’s multi-family property at 296 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn, which is at the centre of a federal mortgage-fraud investigation. Martin’s visit comes a week after Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed him to oversee sensitive probes, giving him authority to conduct grand-jury proceedings outside the local district. Investigators allege that the building, classified by the city as a five-unit dwelling, was listed on mortgage documents as having only four units, enabling James to qualify for lower-cost loans available through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. A criminal referral from Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte in April triggered the inquiry; federal grand juries in Virginia and Maryland are currently weighing possible indictments against James and, in a separate but related case, California Senator Adam Schiff. Both officials deny wrongdoing.
