Florida authorities have arrested Harjinder Singh, an Indian national who entered the United States illegally in 2018, on three counts of vehicular homicide after a semi-truck he was driving caused a fatal crash on Florida’s Turnpike near Fort Pierce on Aug. 12. Investigators say Singh attempted an illegal U-turn at a turnaround reserved for emergency vehicles, forcing a Chrysler Town & Country minivan to collide with the trailer. The minivan’s driver, a 30-year-old man from Florida City, died at a hospital; two passengers—a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach and a 54-year-old man from Miami—were pronounced dead at the scene. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles described Singh’s actions as “shocking and criminal.” He remains in custody on state charges, and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer has been lodged. State officials said that once any prison term is completed, Singh will be deported. The case has drawn political scrutiny because Singh obtained a Commercial Driver’s License in California despite his unlawful status. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier criticized California’s licensing practices and said his office is exploring legal options to hold the state accountable. California law requires proof of legal presence for commercial licenses, and officials in Tallahassee contend that lax enforcement in the Golden State contributed to the Florida fatalities.
