Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has sued Roblox Corp., alleging the online gaming platform "knowingly and intentionally" failed to adopt basic safeguards that would protect children from sexual predators. The complaint, filed Aug. 14 in the state’s 21st Judicial District Court, contends Roblox facilitates the distribution of child sexual abuse material and violates Louisiana’s unfair-trade-practices law, negligence standards and unjust-enrichment rules. The state seeks damages and an injunction requiring stronger protections. The 42-page filing cites user-generated games such as "Escape to Epstein Island" and recounts a July arrest in Livingston Parish where a suspect in possession of child pornography was found using Roblox with voice-altering software to lure minors. Murrill says more than 40 percent of Roblox’s roughly 82 million daily active users are under 12, and asserts the company’s lack of age verification and content labeling prioritises revenue over safety. Roblox rejected the accusations as "categorically untrue," saying it devotes "vast resources" to 24-hour human and automated moderation, limits the sharing of personal data and cooperates with law-enforcement agencies. "No system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection," the company said, adding it is willing to work with the attorney general’s office. Investors reacted swiftly: Roblox shares fell as much as 11 percent on Friday and closed down 6.34 percent after the lawsuit became public. The action follows at least six other child-safety suits filed against the company in recent weeks. One day after the Louisiana filing, Roblox announced new restrictions intended to curb inappropriate content, including limiting access to unrated experiences to developers and ID-verified users and rolling out an automated tool to detect violative scenes. The company is also part of an industry consortium developing AI systems to identify and remove child sexual abuse material.
