First Lady Melania Trump has threatened to sue Hunter Biden for at least $1 billion over remarks linking her to the late sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. In an Aug. 6 demand letter obtained by multiple media outlets, her lawyer said Biden’s statements were “false, defamatory, disparaging and inflammatory” and ordered him to remove a video interview and issue a public apology. The letter, sent by Miami litigator Alejandro Brito and citing Florida’s pre-suit defamation statute (§ 770.01), targets comments Biden made during an Aug. 5 appearance on the “Channel 5” YouTube program in which he claimed Epstein introduced Melania to Donald Trump. Brito asserted the claim caused the first lady “overwhelming financial and reputational harm” and set a 5 p.m. ET deadline on Aug. 7 for a full retraction. Biden rejected the demand in a follow-up interview posted Aug. 14, replying “F— that. That’s not gonna happen.” He said he was repeating reporting by author Michael Wolff and invited the Trumps to sit for depositions if a lawsuit proceeds. “I think they’re bullies, and they think a billion dollars is going to scare me,” he added. President Donald Trump told Fox Radio he encouraged his wife to move forward, saying she could “use my lawyers.” The couple maintain they met in 1998 through modeling agent Paolo Zampolli. The Daily Beast and Democratic strategist James Carville have already retracted and apologized for similar assertions. Any defamation case would require Melania Trump to prove Biden acted with “actual malice,” the high standard that applies to public figures.
