xAI, the artificial-intelligence company led by Elon Musk, has added a "spicy" setting to its Grok Imagine image-and-video generator, enabling paying subscribers to create sexually explicit clips. An iOS update released this week (version 1.1.36) puts the video option alongside image generation, and Musk said usage has surged to more than 34 million images since Monday. Testing by The Verge found the spicy mode can produce nude deepfakes of celebrities such as Taylor Swift without users explicitly requesting nudity. The feature relies on a superficial age check that asks only for a birth year, and appears to ignore xAI’s own policy banning pornographic depictions of identifiable persons. Rival systems from Google and OpenAI block similar content by default. The rollout adds to scrutiny of Musk’s AI ambitions just as he promises to open-source the previous Grok 2 model next week. The ease with which Grok Imagine can generate non-consensual sexual content is likely to draw regulatory attention and potential legal challenges, especially in jurisdictions that have moved to curb deepfake pornography.
