Winston & Strawn LLP has sued Hunter Biden in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, alleging he owes the firm more than $50,000 for past legal work. The complaint, filed on June 20, says the unpaid bills stem from the firm’s representation of the former president’s son during his Delaware gun-possession trial and related federal tax and congressional investigations. According to the engagement letter attached to the filing, then-partner Abbe Lowell—who has since left Winston & Strawn to open his own practice—charged Biden $1,510 per hour, while other partners billed between $890 and $1,945. Court papers state that some invoices were paid between March 2023 and October 2024 but that “a substantial amount remains due and owing” despite repeated requests for payment. Neither Biden nor Lowell has publicly commented on the lawsuit, and a Winston & Strawn spokesperson declined to elaborate beyond the filing. The case adds to Biden’s financial and legal pressures following last year’s convictions on gun and tax charges, for which he received a presidential pardon in December.
