Lithuania has formally asked NATO to reinforce the Baltic nation’s air-defence shield after investigators confirmed that a Russian-made drone carrying about two kilograms of explosives crossed into its territory from Belarus on 28 July and was recovered on 1 August in a military training area near Vilnius. Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys and Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene said in a joint letter to NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte that “immediate measures” are needed to deter further incursions, describing the incident as the second breach of Lithuanian airspace in less than a month and evidence of a “real and growing” threat. Prosecutors said the explosives were neutralised on site and that the unmanned Gerbera-type aircraft may have strayed off course, though alternative scenarios remain under investigation. Vilnius also urged Minsk to prevent similar incidents, warning of potential political and other responses if violations continue.
