The WNBA is contending with a string of disruptions in which neon-green sex toys have been hurled onto courts during live play, forcing stoppages at least six times since 29 July in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Phoenix. Players and coaches, including Los Angeles Sparks coach Lynne Roberts and Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, have condemned the incidents as dangerous and disrespectful. Police have arrested two spectators. Delbert Carver, 23, faces disorderly-conduct, indecent-exposure and trespass charges in Georgia, while 18-year-old Kaden Lopez was booked in Phoenix on assault and related counts after a toy struck a fan. Both incidents carry potential one-year WNBA arena bans in addition to criminal penalties. Responsibility for at least some of the stunts has been claimed by backers of “Green Dildo Coin,” a memecoin created on 28 July. A spokesman told multiple outlets the objects were deployed as a viral marketing ploy to boost the token’s visibility. Since the first incident the coin’s value has nearly tripled, with CoinGecko placing its market capitalization near $15 million and daily trading volume around $1.2 million. League officials say the campaign endangers athletes and spectators and have ordered arenas to tighten screening, including a temporary no-bag policy at selected games. The WNBA said anyone tossing objects will be ejected, banned for at least a year and referred to law enforcement. Security experts warn that non-metallic items are difficult to detect, underscoring the challenge for venues already wrestling with larger crowds drawn by the league’s surging popularity.
