Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has appointed Omar Reyes Colmenares as the new head of the Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera (UIF), replacing Pablo Gómez. Reyes Colmenares, a lawyer and former head of Prevention and Social Reintegration at the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), is known for his close ties to Omar García Harfuch, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection. His appointment, which requires approval by the Permanent Commission of Congress, is expected to strengthen the UIF's efforts in detecting, preventing, and combating money laundering, illicit resource operations, and terrorism financing. Pablo Gómez will now lead a newly created Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform, which Sheinbaum formalized through a decree published in the Official Journal of the Federation. The commission includes notable figures such as Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Pepe Merino, Ernestina Godoy, Lázaro Cárdenas Batel, Arturo Zaldívar, and Jesús Ramírez Cuevas. Sheinbaum announced a nationwide citizen survey to gather public opinion on the electoral reform, addressing concerns about party funding and the number of proportional representation seats (plurinominales). The president emphasized that the reform process will include input from opposition parties and former National Electoral Institute officials. Reyes Colmenares has a background in intelligence and security, having worked with the Attorney General's Office and Mexico City's justice system, and was part of Sheinbaum's security circle during her tenure as Mexico City mayor.
