Ernesto Cuitláhuac Vázquez Reyna, the delegate of the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) in Tamaulipas, was assassinated on August 4, 2025, in Reynosa. He was attacked with grenades and gunfire while traveling in a bulletproof Cadillac Escalade on Bulevar Miguel Hidalgo. The assault involved armed civilians who blocked avenues and launched explosives at his vehicle before fatally shooting him. The incident occurred in broad daylight and was witnessed by numerous bystanders. Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya confirmed and condemned the killing. The FGR has opened an investigation, linking the assassination to the recent seizure of nearly two million liters of stolen fuel (huachicol) in Reynosa, which occurred about a week prior to the attack. Authorities suspect the involvement of organized crime in retaliation for the crackdown on illegal fuel operations. President Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged to ensure justice in the case. The funeral for Vázquez Reyna was conducted under strict security measures. This killing marks the highest-ranking federal official to be murdered in the state of Tamaulipas.
