Ernesto Cuitláhuac Vázquez Reyna, the delegate of the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) in Tamaulipas, was assassinated on August 4, 2025, in Reynosa. He was attacked with grenades and gunfire while traveling in a vehicle on Bulevar Miguel Hidalgo, with the assault occurring in broad daylight and in front of witnesses. The vehicle, reportedly a Cadillac Escalade, was shot at and set on fire. Authorities responded with investigations and reported related violence in the city, including blockades and shootouts. The FGR has linked the killing to organized crime, citing a "solid probability" that the attack was retaliation for a recent operation in which nearly two million liters of stolen fuel (huachicol) were seized in Reynosa. This operation took place about a week before the assassination. Following the murder, a federal investigation was opened, and federal and state forces increased their presence in the area. On August 8, 2025, Jaret Roberto Hernández, a suspected member of "Los Metros," a faction of the Gulf Cartel, was arrested in Reynosa in connection with the assassination. Hernández was found in a rehabilitation center and was already subject to a federal arrest warrant. Additionally, it emerged that Vázquez Reyna had been investigating Tania Contreras, the president-elect of the Supreme Court of Tamaulipas, following a complaint filed by the PAN party. The governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal Anaya, condemned the killing, and Mexico City’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, pledged justice in the case. The funeral for Vázquez Reyna was held under strict security measures. The case remains under active investigation by the FGR.
