Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Thursday that former Petróleos Mexicanos chief executive Carlos Alberto Treviño Medina was arrested on 12 August in Dallas, Texas, and will be deported to stand trial at home on corruption charges. The detention follows an extradition request that has been pending for about five years, the president told reporters at her daily news conference. The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) later confirmed that Treviño is wanted in Mexico for criminal association and money-laundering offences and that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement Removal Operations unit is holding him while deportation proceedings are completed. An arrest warrant was first issued in 2021 after the former executive failed to appear in court. Prosecutors say Treviño, who ran Pemex from November 2017 to December 2018 during the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto, accepted roughly 4 million pesos (about US$240,000) in bribes to authorise a contract for the Ethylene XXI petrochemical complex operated by Odebrecht’s Braskem subsidiary. The accusation stems from testimony provided by another ex-Pemex director, Emilio Lozoya Austin, who is separately facing trial for corruption. Treviño’s legal team disputes the Mexican government’s account, arguing that the Dallas detention arose from an immigration misunderstanding, that he holds legal status in the United States and that no Interpol red notice exists against him. They contend that any attempt to deport him would violate due-process guarantees and say Mexico should pursue a formal extradition instead. If the deportation proceeds, Treviño would become the second former head of the state oil company to appear before Mexican courts over Odebrecht-related allegations, underscoring the Sheinbaum administration’s pledge to press high-profile corruption cases dating back to previous governments.
