The Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) of Mexico has annulled the victories of 46 candidates elected as magistrates and district judges in the 2025 Judicial Election due to failure to meet the required academic average of 8 or 9 in relevant subjects. Among these, one candidate was disqualified for being in preventive detention for sexual abuse. The INE declared the overall election valid but left 46 judicial seats vacant due to these disqualifications. Additionally, the INE has imposed fines totaling approximately 32 million pesos on national and local political parties, including the PT and PRI, for irregularities in tax payments between 2014 and 2023. Furthermore, the INE sanctioned 177 candidates who won judicial posts for appearing in so-called "acordeones"—vote guides distributed during the election—imposing fines totaling 6.3 million pesos. These sanctions, ranging from 22,000 to 140,000 pesos depending on the candidate's position and financial capacity, include future Supreme Court ministers and magistrates of the Judicial Discipline Tribunal. The decision to penalize candidates for the use of "acordeones" has been met with criticism from Mexico City’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who described the INE's resolutions as contradictory, noting that the electoral body initially stated the "acordeones" did not influence the election but later reversed its position. Sheinbaum has called for awaiting the Tribunal Electoral del Poder Judicial de la Federación's ruling on the matter. The INE also approved sanctions amounting to 18.34 million pesos for irregularities and omissions in expense reporting during the federal and local judicial elections.
