Mexico’s Supreme Court unanimously granted an injunction to Morena congressional leader Ricardo Monreal, ruling that Campeche Governor Layda Sansores violated his rights to privacy and honour by airing WhatsApp conversations of uncertain provenance between him and PRI chief Alejandro “Alito” Moreno. The First Chamber ordered Sansores to remove the material from the 25 October 2022 episode of her weekly programme “Martes del Jaguar.” Justice Margarita Ríos Farjat’s opinion said the governor failed to verify the authenticity of the chats, presented them selectively and out of context, and thus breached her constitutional duty of objectivity. The court found that the statements were not protected speech because they relied on information that may have been obtained illicitly and harmed Monreal’s reputation. In a separate decision, the Electoral Tribunal’s Superior Chamber upheld a finding that former Morelos governor and current federal deputy Cuauhtémoc Blanco committed gender-based political violence by excluding Senator Juanita Guerra from a 2023 military parade. Blanco will be entered in the National Registry of Persons Sanctioned for Gender-Based Political Violence for 18 months, restricting any new candidacies during that period.
