Roberto Lazzeri Montaño assumed the post of director general of the Mexican development banks Nacional Financiera (Nafin) and Banco Nacional de Comercio Exterior (Bancomext) on 18 August, replacing Luis Antonio Ramírez Pineda, who had led the institutions since 2022. The Finance Ministry said Lazzeri was appointed with the backing of President Claudia Sheinbaum and Finance Secretary Édgar Amador. An economist trained at CIDE with additional legal studies at the Universidad del Valle de México, Lazzeri most recently headed the coordination office of the Finance Secretary. His earlier roles at the ministry include director general of public debt and of funding, positions he has held since joining the agency in 2020. He began his public-sector career in 2005 managing Mexico City’s debt portfolio and later worked on sub-national financing at Banobras. The leadership change comes as Nafin prepares to absorb fiduciary businesses transferred from CIBanco and Intercam, two commercial lenders that U.S. authorities recently linked to suspected money-laundering activities. The government views Nafin and Bancomext as pivotal to its "Plan México" economic programme and expects Lazzeri to strengthen their role in promoting development financing and financial inclusion.
