Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has appointed Omar Reyes Colmenares as the new head of the Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera (UIF), the financial intelligence unit within the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP). Reyes Colmenares, a lawyer and former director of the Central Office of Interpol Mexico, replaces Pablo Gómez, who will now lead the newly created Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform. The commission, formalized by Sheinbaum through a decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, includes seven members such as Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Pepe Merino, Ernestina Godoy, Lázaro Cárdenas Batel, Arturo Zaldívar, and Jesús Ramírez Cuevas. It aims to draft proposals and conduct studies on electoral reform, incorporating input from opposition parties, former National Electoral Institute (INE) officials, and the public through a national survey. Sheinbaum highlighted that the survey will address concerns about the number of plurinominal seats and the substantial funding political parties receive. Omar Reyes is noted for his expertise in intelligence and security, with a background in the Mexico City government under Sheinbaum and close ties to Omar Harfuch. His appointment is expected to strengthen UIF's efforts in detecting and combating money laundering, illicit resources, and terrorism financing, particularly related to drug trafficking and illicit fuel operations. The appointment requires ratification by the Mexican Congress.
