Mexico’s Navy intercepted a low-profile semisubmersible off the Pacific coast of Guerrero on 27 June, confiscating more than 3.5 tonnes of cocaine and arresting its three foreign crew members. The vessel, located during a maritime patrol, was escorted to port where 180 packages of the drug were off-loaded and secured. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said the haul represents an economic blow of roughly 846 million pesos (about US$46 million) to transnational trafficking networks and prevented an estimated 7.2 million retail doses from reaching the market. The operation was coordinated by the Navy and the federal Security Cabinet, with support from the Attorney-General’s Office. Mexican authorities have tracked an uptick in the use of semisubmersibles to move narcotics along Pacific routes. Officials described the seizure as one of the largest maritime cocaine captures of the year and part of a broader strategy that has intensified joint military-police patrols in coastal corridors viewed as key departure points for drugs bound for North America.
