Mexico’s navy intercepted a semi-submersible craft off the Pacific coast of Guerrero on 27 June, confiscating about 3.5 tonnes of cocaine and detaining its three foreign crew members, federal security minister Omar García Harfuch said. Sailors recovered 180 bale-style packages from the low-profile vessel. The Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) estimates the haul’s street value at roughly 846 million pesos (US$44.7 million) and says it prevented about 7.2 million individual doses from reaching the market. The operation was conducted by naval coast-guard units in coordination with the Defence Ministry, National Guard and the Attorney General’s Office, which has taken custody of the suspects, cargo and vessel. Semar noted that maritime forces have seized more than 44.8 tonnes of cocaine since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October.
