The federal government of Mexico, in coordination with the Mexico City administration, commemorated the 700th anniversary of the founding of Mexico-Tenochtitlán with a series of events and cultural activities held primarily in the Zócalo, the city's main square. The celebrations, taking place from July 11 to July 27, 2025, included a videomapping show titled "Memoria Luminosa. México-Tenochtitlan 700 años," which projected historical images onto the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace each night. Monumental sculptures of pre-Hispanic Mexica iconography were installed in the Zócalo as part of the exhibitions. On July 26, a major commemorative ceremony titled "México-Tenochtitlán, Siete Siglos de Legado de Grandeza" was held, featuring over 3,500 dancers representing ancestral Mexica migration, participation of 838 actors in a historical reenactment, and involvement of more than 800 members of the Mexican Army and Armed Forces. President Claudia Sheinbaum led the event, delivering remarks that emphasized the enduring legacy and cultural identity of Mexico-Tenochtitlán, recognizing indigenous peoples, and calling for an official apology for atrocities committed during the Spanish Conquest—a proposal previously suggested by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2021. The event sought to connect contemporary Mexico City residents with their pre-Hispanic heritage through artistic performances, exhibitions, and symbolic acts, underscoring the historical and urban significance of the ancient Mexica capital.
