In early July 2025, Mexico City witnessed its first large-scale protest against gentrification, primarily in neighborhoods such as Hipódromo, Condesa, Roma, Juárez, Doctores, and Obrera. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered, expressing frustration over rising rents, displacement of local residents, and the impact of an influx of foreigners, particularly Americans and digital nomads, which they blamed for driving up housing costs and altering neighborhood dynamics. The protest, initially peaceful and held in locations like Parque México, escalated into violence and vandalism, with masked individuals damaging businesses, restaurants, and buildings, and harassing tourists. Among those targeted was prominent influencer Luisito Comunica, who was publicly insulted and accused of contributing to the gentrification problem. The demonstrations included chants such as "¡Fuera gringos!" and "Go home, gringo!", reflecting anti-foreigner sentiments. Following these events, the government of Mexico City, led by Jefa de Gobierno Clara Brugada, announced a comprehensive plan titled "Por una ciudad habitable y asequible con identidad y arraigo local" to address the negative effects of gentrification. This plan comprises 14 measures aimed at regulating rent increases to not exceed inflation, controlling short-term rental platforms like Airbnb, creating a Defensoría de Derechos Inquilinarios (Tenant Rights Office), and implementing legislative reforms to stabilize housing prices and prevent displacement. Subsequent protests continued into late July, including a third march starting from Hemiciclo a Juárez, which faced confrontations with police and altered routes, ultimately ending near Metro Juárez with demands for dignified housing and an end to neighborhood displacement. The government's response reflects an effort to balance urban development with the protection of local residents' rights amid ongoing tensions related to gentrification and mass tourism in Mexico City.
