Mexico City experienced unprecedented heavy rainfall on August 10 and 12, 2025, marking the most intense precipitation in the area since 1952. The storm delivered 84.5 millimeters of rain at the Zócalo, surpassing the previous record of 67 millimeters. These torrential rains caused widespread flooding across multiple boroughs including Cuauhtémoc, Venustiano Carranza, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztacalco, and Nezahualcóyotl, affecting over 400 homes and causing significant disruptions to transportation and infrastructure. Key affected sites included major roads such as Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza and Canal de Río Churubusco, the Metro system with several stations flooded or closed (including Pantitlán, Potrero, and Hangares), and the Hospital General Balbuena. The flooding also resulted in the formation of large sinkholes, notably a 4-meter-long, 2.5-meter-wide, and 4.5-meter-deep socavón on Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza, which led to lane closures and traffic congestion near the Mexico City International Airport (AICM). The AICM was severely impacted, suspending flight operations for nearly nine hours on August 10 and again for over four hours on August 12 due to flooding and low visibility. These suspensions affected approximately 19,500 passengers, with 16 flights diverted, three canceled, and 120 delayed. Passengers faced extended wait times, with some reporting up to 19 hours in queues for flight rescheduling. Aeroméxico and other airlines urged authorities to implement preventive measures to ensure airport functionality. The government activated the "Tlaloque" emergency plan and issued purple, orange, and yellow alerts for multiple boroughs due to ongoing and forecasted heavy rains and potential hailstorms. Authorities have been conducting drainage and cleanup operations, deploying over 1,200 personnel in affected areas. Despite efforts, flooding and traffic disruptions continued into mid-August, with warnings of further intense rainfall and potential hail expected through August 16. The federal government announced a special coordination to address the airport's flooding effects. The persistent heavy rains have strained Mexico City's infrastructure and emergency response systems, prompting ongoing monitoring and preparedness measures.
