Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) has come under scrutiny after using a voice generated by artificial intelligence (AI) in a promotional video on TikTok that closely resembled the voice of the late Pepe Lavat, a renowned Mexican voice actor known for his narration in Dragon Ball Z. The INE acknowledged employing AI tools, specifically a voice synthesis model called 'Fake You,' but denied using any actual recordings of Lavat's voice, stating the audio was 100% synthesized and based on a pre-existing voice available on TikTok. The use of the AI-generated voice without prior permission or compensation to Lavat's family sparked criticism from the actor's widow and the dubbing community, who called for justice and regulation due to a legal gap concerning AI voice cloning. INE President Guadalupe Taddei later clarified that the voice was not intended to emulate Lavat's and that the institute faced budget cuts influencing their decision. Following the backlash, the INE agreed to remove the video from TikTok and announced plans to implement training on the ethical and responsible use of AI. The controversy has ignited a broader debate in Mexico about the ethical implications of AI in media and the need for legislation to protect voice actors' rights.
