Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday rejected claims that her government has struck a new security agreement with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for an initiative called “Proyecto Portero.” She said the administration “has reached no agreement—none of the security institutions have—with the DEA,” contradicting a statement that U.S. officials had circulated a day earlier. Sheinbaum clarified that the only recent joint activity with U.S. counterparts was a workshop held in Texas and that cooperation on security matters continues to run exclusively through an existing framework with the U.S. Department of State. She added that Mexican officials “do not know why” the DEA issued the contested communication.
