A riot erupted on August 2, 2025, at the state prison in Tuxpan, Veracruz, resulting in the deaths of seven to eight inmates and injuries to 11 others, according to multiple reports from the Veracruz Secretariat of Public Security and local authorities. The disturbance was reportedly triggered by abuses, extortion, and control exerted by a criminal group known as "Grupo Sombra," now referred to as "Mafia Veracruzana," which allegedly dominated the prison. Following the riot, authorities deployed federal and state forces to restore order and transferred those responsible for the unrest to another penitentiary in Pánuco. Among the deceased were five Guatemalan nationals, confirmed by the Guatemalan Consulate in Acayucan, Veracruz. The governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle, has called for an investigation into the incident. Additional violence in Tuxpan was reported shortly after the riot, including an armed attack resulting in one death and one injury. The Guatemalan government continues to monitor the situation of its nationals detained in the United States, with 14 Guatemalans currently held at the Alligator Alcatraz detention center in Florida.
