A riot erupted on Saturday afternoon at the Centro de Readaptación Social prison in Tuxpan, Veracruz, resulting in the deaths of seven inmates and injuries to 11 others, according to the Veracruz Secretariat of Public Security. Among the deceased, Guatemalan consular authorities confirmed that five were Guatemalan nationals. The perpetrators of the disturbance were subsequently transferred to a penitentiary in Pánuco. Guatemalan consular officials are coordinating with Mexican authorities on the repatriation of the bodies. Separately, the Guatemalan Consul General in Miami reported that 249 Guatemalan nationals are currently detained at the Alligator Alcatraz detention center in Florida, with most held for irregular migration rather than criminal offenses. The consul has interviewed 37 detainees to assess their situation. Additionally, from January to August 7, 2025, over 27,000 Guatemalans were returned from the U.S. and Mexico, with the majority repatriated from the U.S. via 277 flights. The riot in Tuxpan occurred shortly before an unrelated armed attack in the same city that left one man dead and another injured.
