President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday described as “excessive” a ruling by the Tribunal Electoral del Poder Judicial de la Federación that obliges citizen Karla Estrella to post a public apology every day for 30 consecutive days to Partido del Trabajo deputy Diana Karina Barreras. Speaking at her morning press conference, Sheinbaum said power should be exercised with humility, not “soberbia,” and argued that a single apology would have been sufficient. The tribunal found Estrella had committed political gender-based violence by asserting on the social network X that Barreras secured her candidacy through her husband, legislator Sergio Gutiérrez Luna. As part of the sentence, Estrella must address the lawmaker only as “Dato Protegido” in the daily posts and acknowledge having inflicted symbolic, psychological and media violence. The decision, handed down under case SRE-PSC-94/2024, sparked debate on the limits between freedom of expression and protections against gender violence online. Sheinbaum urged judges to act with proportionality, saying the judiciary should keep disputes in their "justo término" while safeguarding both the right to criticize and the right of reply.
