Mexico City President Claudia Sheinbaum has emphasized that private property rights are guaranteed amid plans to regularize abandoned or occupied homes through a new program by Infonavit, the federal housing institute. Sheinbaum clarified that this initiative will be conducted within the framework of the law and will not involve expropriations or dispossessions. Addressing concerns related to gentrification in Mexico City, Sheinbaum condemned racism and classism and highlighted the need for an integrated approach to tackle the issue, including the construction of new housing. The federal government will support states and municipalities to protect the right to housing, prevent rent increases, and avoid displacement of original residents. Following an anti-gentrification march in neighborhoods such as Condesa and Roma, Sheinbaum attributed the acceleration of gentrification to policies promoted by former Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera. While affirming the government's commitment to guaranteeing the right to housing and urban space, Sheinbaum ruled out introducing specific new legislation on the matter at this time.
