The government of Mexico, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, has established the Comisión Presidencial para la Reforma Electoral (Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform) to evaluate and propose changes to the country's electoral system. The commission is headed by Pablo Gómez Álvarez, who recently left his position as head of the Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera (UIF) of the Ministry of Finance to focus on this new role. The commission's initial task is to conduct a comprehensive diagnosis of the current electoral and party system, followed by the development of legislative proposals. The commission includes prominent figures such as Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Pepe Merino, Ernestina Godoy, Lázaro Cárdenas Batel, Arturo Zaldívar, and Jesús Ramírez Cuevas. President Sheinbaum has emphasized broad citizen participation, including opposition parties and former National Electoral Institute (INE) officials, through national surveys and forums to gather public opinion on issues like plurinominal legislators and party funding. Concurrently, Omar Reyes Colmenares, a lawyer and former head of the Office of Interpol Mexico with close ties to Secretary of Security Omar García Harfuch, has been appointed as the new head of the UIF, pending Congressional approval. Reyes has experience in intelligence, penitentiary security, and has worked in the Attorney General's Office and Mexico City’s Prosecutor's Office. The administration expects his leadership to strengthen efforts against money laundering and illicit resource operations. President Sheinbaum has called for unity within her party Morena amid concerns about internal divisions and stressed that the electoral reform process will be inclusive and aimed at consensus.
