Tropical Storm Ivo formed Wednesday in the eastern Pacific about 310 kilometres south-southeast of Acapulco, Mexico, with sustained winds near 65 km/h and gusts up to 85 km/h, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The storm is moving west-northwest at roughly 35 km/h and is expected to track parallel to, but generally offshore from, Mexico’s southwestern coast. Mexico’s water agency Conagua warned that Ivo will dump 75 to 150 millimetres of rain on Guerrero and Oaxaca, generating 2.5- to 3.5-metre waves, strong rip currents and possible waterspouts. Authorities cautioned residents about flash floods, river surges and landslides, though no coastal watches or warnings had been issued as of late Wednesday. Forecast models show Ivo strengthening and approaching hurricane intensity by Friday afternoon as it approaches waters off Baja California.
