The United States government has announced monetary rewards totaling up to $26 million for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of five alleged leaders of the Mexican criminal organization known as Cárteles Unidos. The U.S. Department of State's Office of International Narcotics Affairs is spearheading the effort, offering a $10 million reward for Juan José Farías Álvarez, also known as "El Abuelo," the head of the cartel. Other individuals targeted include Nicolás Sierra Santana ("El Gordo") and Alfonso Fernández Magallón, each with rewards of $5 million; and Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez ("Güicho") and Edgar Orozco Cabadas, each with $3 million rewards. The investigation into Cárteles Unidos reportedly began following a car accident in Tennessee. The group has recently been designated by U.S. authorities as a terrorist organization. Juan José Farías Álvarez is also accused of extorting avocado farmers among other criminal activities. The rewards are offered for information that leads to the arrest and/or conviction of these individuals in any country.
