The United States has indicted Haitian gang leader and former police officer Jimmy "Barbecue" Cherizier for conspiring to violate U.S. sanctions. The indictment was announced by a federal grand jury and includes charges related to funding gang activities in Haiti. In connection with the case, the FBI has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Cherizier's arrest or conviction. Cherizier is considered one of Haiti's most powerful gang leaders. Separately, the U.S. government has also announced a $10 million reward for the arrest of Juan José Farías Álvarez, known as "El Abuelo," the head of the Mexican drug trafficking group Cárteles Unidos, following a Tennessee car accident that triggered the investigation. The U.S. has offered up to $26 million in total rewards for information leading to the capture of five alleged leaders of Cárteles Unidos, recently designated as a terrorist group.
