Gaza’s humanitarian emergency continued to intensify on 3 August as the United Nations repeated warnings that acute hunger is putting hundreds of thousands of Palestinians at risk of famine. Hospitals report critical shortages of fuel and medicines, while aid groups say over 470,000 people are facing severe food insecurity after months of Israeli restrictions on commercial goods and relief supplies. Several governments stepped up relief efforts over the weekend. The Israeli military said it dropped 136 boxes of food over the enclave on Sunday, while Egypt’s armed forces dispatched nine aircraft loaded with rations for separate airdrops. In parallel, the United Arab Emirates delivered 65 tons of pharmaceuticals to World Health Organization warehouses under its “Gallant Knight” initiative, and Egypt cleared two trucks carrying 107 tons of diesel—fuel that doctors say is vital to keep hospital generators running. Pakistan sent its 17th humanitarian consignment—100 tons of ready-to-eat meals, powdered milk and medical equipment—raising its total aid to Gaza to 1,615 tons since October 2023, according to Islamabad’s National Disaster Management Authority. Additional Pakistani flights carrying a further 100 tons are planned in the coming days. Against this backdrop, Abu Ubaida, spokesman for Hamas’s Qassam Brigades, said the group would allow Red Cross deliveries of food and medicine to Israeli captives only if Israel opens humanitarian corridors for all Gazans and suspends military overflights during transfer windows. He added that detainees would not receive preferential treatment while what he called Israel’s “starvation policy” persists.
