Amnesty International said in a report released 17 August that Israel is pursuing “a deliberate campaign of starvation” against the 2.4 million residents of the Gaza Strip, asserting that hunger is an intended outcome of Israeli policy rather than a by-product of military operations. The 97-page document draws on testimonies from 19 displaced Palestinians and two medical workers, along with satellite imagery and UN data, to depict a systematic destruction of food production, restrictions on aid and the collapse of health services. Citing Gaza Ministry of Health figures, Amnesty notes at least 110 children have died from malnutrition-related complications, while nearly 13,000 cases of acute child malnutrition were treated in July alone, a monthly peak since the war began in October 2023. An Integrated Food Security Phase Classification alert on 29 July concluded that famine thresholds had been reached across most of the enclave. Separate UNOSAT and FAO analysis found 86 % of permanent crop fields severely degraded by razing, shelling or access bans. Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) rejected the findings on 12 August, saying there is “no sign of widespread malnutrition” in Gaza and blaming shortages on Hamas. Amnesty counters that international humanitarian organisations face arbitrary entry bans and new registration rules, and urges an immediate, unconditional lifting of the blockade, a sustained cease-fire and a halt to arms transfers to Israel, arguing that the starvation policy could amount to genocide under international law.
