Unverified videos circulating on social media on 1 July show a series of three loud blasts followed by a column of black smoke rising over Shahr-e Rey, an industrial district on the south-eastern edge of Tehran. Residents in the neighbourhoods of Mashiriyeh, Khavaran and Dolat-Abad reported hearing the explosions at about 15:30 local time. Open-source analysts pinpointed the epicentre to a weapons and missile warehouse believed to be operated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the nearby mountains (35°37’06”N 51°30’34”E). Voice of America Farsi and other outlets said state-run media have provided no explanation, and there was no immediate statement on casualties or damage. The incident is the latest in a wave of unexplained fires and blasts around the Iranian capital. On 26 June a blaze, preceded by a reported explosion, damaged an apartment in the upscale Aseman (Sky) Tower in Farmanieh, a building that houses several senior officials. The authorities have yet to attribute a cause for either event, fuelling speculation over the security of military facilities in and around Tehran.
