Hamas said on Monday it has accepted a cease-fire and hostage-release proposal drafted by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, telling the envoys it would sign on without amendments. A Hamas official told AFP and other outlets that the draft calls for a 60-day halt in fighting and the staged liberation of Israeli captives held in Gaza. According to an Egyptian source cited by Reuters and Axios, the plan’s terms would see 10 Israeli hostages freed alive at the outset, with the remainder of roughly half of the captives released later in the truce, alongside an exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Diplomats familiar with the talks said Hamas’s reply is 98 percent identical to the “Whitkoff proposal” that Israel previously endorsed. Mediators have transmitted the Hamas response to Jerusalem, but the Israeli government has not yet issued a formal position. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly insisted that any agreement must secure the return of all hostages and safeguard Israel’s security interests in Gaza. The push for a truce follows more than 22 months of war in which Gaza’s Health Ministry says over 62,000 Palestinians have been killed. International mediators hope the latest deal, if approved by Israel, can ease the humanitarian crisis and open negotiations on a permanent end to the conflict.
