The International Criminal Court has ruled that the arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant remain in force, stating on 16 July 2025 that the orders “stand” while the tribunal reviews Israel’s challenge to its jurisdiction. Originally issued in November 2024, the warrants accuse the two officials of war crimes and crimes against humanity arising from Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip launched after the 7 October 2023 attacks. The judges rejected Tel Aviv’s request to freeze the broader investigation, saying the jurisdictional dispute does not affect the validity of the warrants. The decision defies sustained political pressure. Washington revoked ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan’s U.S. visa and froze his assets in February, and in June imposed sanctions on four ICC judges, two of whom participated in the latest ruling. Israeli emissaries have separately warned court officials of retaliation if the Gaza case proceeds. The ruling coincides with International Criminal Justice Day on 17 July, when Germany and other governments reiterated support for the court. At a ceremony in The Hague the ICC also formally welcomed Ukraine as the 125th State Party to the Rome Statute, underscoring the tribunal’s expanding membership even as it confronts mounting external threats.
International Justice Day highlights the crucial importance for justice to be accessible beyond borders. Access to justice is vital to our global communities, and we will continue to advocate for legal services to be available to all as it is a vital public service today and https://t.co/T2d8Cb7ERF
