Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed as “silly” a campaign pledge by Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, to have him arrested if he visits the city. Speaking in the White House Blue Room on 7 July after a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Netanyahu said he was “not concerned” and added that he intends to travel to New York alongside Trump. Trump, standing beside Netanyahu, called Mamdani a “communist” and assured the Israeli leader that he would “get him out” if any attempt were made to detain him. The president added that the mayoral hopeful “had better behave,” underscoring that such an arrest would face federal resistance. Mamdani has vowed to enforce the International Criminal Court’s warrant against Netanyahu—issued over alleged war crimes in the Israel-Hamas conflict—should he become mayor. The United States is not a party to the ICC, limiting the court’s reach on U.S. soil. A survey reported by The Forward showed 36 percent of likely New York City voters support Mamdani’s stance, while 45 percent oppose it. Current Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for re-election as an independent, distanced himself from Mamdani’s position, saying Netanyahu “is welcome in the city as any other international leader.” Netanyahu’s annual September trip to address the United Nations General Assembly is expected to test these competing vows if Mamdani wins November’s election.
