The Israel Defense Forces said on Thursday that troops uncovered a Hamas document beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, indicating that the militant group used the medical facility for military purposes in February 2025. According to the document, Hamas fighters opened fire from inside the hospital while engaged with advancing Israeli forces. The memorandum, attributed to a Hamas operative, recounts that the unit’s commander, Muhammad al-Bakri, ordered subordinates to barricade an exit with rope, leaving two fighters—identified as Ahmed Shtat and Salim Ma’arouf—outside during the clash. Both men were subsequently killed as they attempted to reach the hospital, the document states. The IDF said the find supports its longstanding contention that Hamas embeds combat operations within civilian infrastructure, a practice prohibited under international humanitarian law. Hamas has not publicly responded to the Israeli allegations.
