The Israel Defense Forces said on 10 July it recovered a February 2025 document from a tunnel beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza. The handwritten report, attributed to a Hamas operative, describes a firefight in which two militants fired at Israeli troops from inside the hospital complex. According to the document, Hamas company commander Muhammad al-Bakri ordered the door to the tunnel sealed, abandoning fighters Ahmad Shataat and Salim Ma'arouf as Israeli forces advanced. The IDF claims the account substantiates its allegation that Hamas conducts combat operations from medical facilities and endangers both patients and its own personnel. On 17 July the military released photographs of Izz al-Din Haddad—commander of Hamas’s Gaza City Brigade and, since the May killing of Muhammad Sinwar, the group’s de facto leader in Gaza. The images, which the IDF says were also found in the same tunnel, show Haddad with dyed hair and a trimmed beard, changes the army interprets as an attempt to avoid identification. The findings add to Israel’s effort to document Hamas’s use of civilian infrastructure and underground networks. Hamas-linked social-media channels dismissed the newly released images as fabricated, and the group has not issued an official statement. The materials have not yet been independently verified.
