BREAKING: Israeli soldier Asaf Zamir, just 19 years old from Dimona, has fallen in battle in southern Gaza. A young warrior. A hero. May his memory be a blessing. https://t.co/4a5UTVRE7Y
The Israel Defense Forces said two 19-year-old soldiers were killed on Friday in separate incidents in the Gaza Strip, raising the military’s death toll in the war that began on Oct. 7 to 883. Sergeant Asaf Zamir, an armored-corps soldier from Dimona serving in the 53rd Battalion of the 188th “Barak” Brigade, was fatally wounded around 7:30 a.m. when militants fired an anti-tank missile at his unit’s tank during operations near Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Two other soldiers from the same tank crew were seriously injured and another was moderately hurt before being evacuated under fire, the army said. Earlier in the day, Sergeant Yair Eliyahou, a combat engineer from the community of Azar attached to the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade, was killed during an overnight operation in northern Gaza. A preliminary investigation found that two D9 armored bulldozers collided while maneuvering in the dark, leading to the fatality. The latest losses underscore the continued intensity of Israeli ground operations in Gaza nearly nine months into the conflict, which erupted after Hamas’s cross-border attack last October.
