Iran has dismissed a call by European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas to reopen talks aimed at ending Tehran’s nuclear programme, saying the EU and the United Kingdom would be “irrelevant” and “meaningless” participants if the objective is to dismantle Iran’s atomic activities. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi argued that Kallas’s demand violates the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which affirms every signatory’s right to pursue peaceful nuclear technology. He added that the stance also ignores UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, frameworks that still govern Iran’s nuclear obligations despite the United States’ 2018 withdrawal. Araghchi accused Brussels of adopting a “destructive attitude” toward diplomacy and warned that persisting with such positions would exclude the EU and the UK from any future negotiations. He reiterated that Tehran would not discuss terminating its programme but remains open to talks that respect its legal rights. The exchange comes as Iran continues to scale back cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Earlier this week, President Masoud Pezeshkian enacted a law suspending certain safeguards inspections, although IAEA personnel remain in the country while awaiting clarification. Washington condemned the move, urging Tehran to restore full compliance with its nuclear commitments.
